I have learned the hard way. Coming from someone who has had pink, orange, black, brunette, and my more natural color, blonde, I have had to learn a thing or two about getting colour to last longer.
Nothing looks more unappealing than a washed-out dye job. Regular salon touch-ups are so time-consuming, expensive, and damaging to the hair.

- Wait a full 72 hrs before shampooing:
Once you colour your hair, wait for about 72 hours before shampooing your hair. The ammonia present in the dye opens the hair cuticles so that the color can penetrate the hair shaft very well. It takes up to three days for the cuticle layer to fully close.
If you shampoo right after coloring your hair, then there are chances of your hair color fading and looking dull instantly. If you want to keep your new hair color looking vibrant, it’s best to wait it out on the shampooing.
It generally takes up to three days for the cuticle surface to fully close, so the longer you wait to shampoo your hair after you color hair, the more time the color tone will soak into the hair cuticle which will help your hair color last longer in between salon visits.
- Use A Color Protectant Shampoo and conditioner to protect hair color:
The type of shampoo you use always plays a major role in keeping your hair color from losing its vibrant tone. When you do wash your hair, use a specially formulated shampoo for color-treated hair. It will not only protect your hair as well as balance its natural PH too.
Color-safe shampoos maintain your hair color and ensure that it does not fade easily. They also contain hydrating and nourishing ingredients that restore and repair your hair. Avoid shampoos with harsh ingredients such as sulfates and alcohols. As will not only strip your hair color but also moisture from your hair.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate is one of the most common type of ingredients present in shampoos. Using sulfates on color-treated hair can be a terrible idea as this is likely to strip your hair color and moisture.
If you want to ensure that your hair color stays for longer time, choose a sulfate-free formula, specifically for color-treated hair to keep your hair healthy looking.
- Avoid Washing Your Hair Every Day:
The most effective way to protect your colored hair is to avoid washing it every day. Frequent washing of hair also strips your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry, dull, brittle and lifeless. To prevent this, wash your hair less often. This will keep the hair color looking vibrant too.
Washing your hair every day is something you want to avoid if wanting your hair color to last longer. Not only are you washing away the natural oils present in your hair that moisturize and keep your hair color looking fresh, you also wash away a little bit of your hair dye every time you wash your hair. Try washing your hair 2-3 times a week to keep your color stay longer.
- Try to use dry shampoo:
On your off days of not washing your hair, try to use color-safe dry shampoos. These will refresh your hair and make it look like you just got a blowout without even having to wash your hair. You can also try color-tinted dry shampoos to revamp your color without having to head to your salon.
If you can’t compromise on your hygiene, so on days between washes, use a color-safe dry shampoo to soak up the grease, dirt, smell and product build-up from your hair.
This will get rid of the grime and dirt without stripping your hair color due to frequent shampooing and give nice volume to your hair and make it healthy looking.
- Add A Pinch of Dye to your conditioner:
Whenever you condition your hair, add a pinch of dye to your conditioner. This can help restore hair color that washes away because of shampooing.
This hack works well if you sport bright colors such as pink, blue or purple, red etc.
This will slightly re-dye your hair every time you wash to keep it looking healthy & fresh until your roots grow out.
- Keep Your Hair Hydrated:
Keep your hair hydrated and fresh as much as possible because hair tends to become dry, dull and brittle after coloring. That’s the magic mantra of your color treated hair.
Deep conditioning helps the hair retain its moisture back, making it soft, silky and shiny. It is also a good idea to get a hot oil treatment at least three days before coloring. Hot oil treatments not only nourish your hair ends, cuticles but also protect it from drying out, owing to all the chemicals in the dye.
- If Your Hair is Damaged, Keep up with trims:
Dead ends won’t hold color and will fade even faster, so make sure you are cutting off those dead ends every 6-8 weeks so your color looks fresh from root to tips.
Since your hair is much more prone to damage after coloring hair, regular trims become crucial for maintaining hair health and preventing the spread of damage. This will also help prevent split ends and breakage. If your dyed locks are frizzy, your hair may be damaged.
The best way to keep your color-treated hair looking its healthiest is to get regular cuts or trims. You don’t have to get a super short cut just trim it enough to keep dry ends at bay.
- Turn down water temperature when shampooing:
A hot shower may feel wonderful to many people, but it is best to avoid washing your hair with hot water. This strips your hair of its natural oils and fades color tremendously. It is advisable to adjust your water temperature to lukewarm or cold while washing your hair.
When washing your hair with hot water, your hair’s cuticle is opened, allowing your color to wash out while shampooing and conditioning.
To prevent seeing all of your color go down the drain, try shampooing with warm water and then rinse with cold water after conditioning. The warm water will allow the shampoo and conditioner to penetrate and cleanse, while the cold water will help seal in the moisture from your conditioner while preventing color from fading by sealing the hair’s cuticle.
- Protect Your Hair from Heat:
Colored hair is more damage-prone and vulnerable to heat. If you want your hair color to look fresh, it is crucial to reduce heat exposure from blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. The outer protective covering of the hair is disrupted as the heat opens up the cuticle and the dye bleeds out easily. Use a thermal protectant hair serum or spray whenever you have to style your hair.
If you absolutely need to use your styling tools, invest in a good heat protectant spray to minimize the damaging effect of heat on your hair.
10. Use leave-in treatments to protect hair color:
Colored and chemically treated hair needs extra nourishment and protection from the sun to prevent damage and loss of nutrients to the hair. Leave-in treatments will help keep your hair smooth and hydrated, and it’s important to find one with UV protection so that the sun won’t fade your hair color.
Leave-in conditioners contain silicones that form a protective layer over the hair. This helps minimize sun damage and calms post-processing frizz. They also help to protect your hair from the damage heat styling tools tend to cause.
Using a leave-in conditioning treatment can also help detangle your hair easily and protect it from environmental factors. Look for leave-in kind of conditioners that are specially formulated to protect color-treated hair.
This is too important if you frequently use blow dryers, curling irons, or straightening irons, or if you spend a lot of time in the sun.
Chlorine is a chemical bleaching agent that generally cleans pools and will definitely strip color from your hair when enjoying a sunny pool day. Blonde hair is susceptible to turning a greenish tint, while darker shades may become dull, dry out, and lose its shine.
So, if you find yourself wanting to go to the pool, try a swimmer’s cap Or, try getting your hair wet in the shower, use conditioner, and then don’t rinse it out. This will create a barrier on the hair shaft so that the chlorine won’t penetrate in your hair.
For added protection you can apply a leave-in conditioner or coconut oil that will form a barrier between the chlorine water and your hair. If you spend a lot of time in a swimming pool, wet your dyed hair and apply a protective leave-in conditioner before you go into the pool.
12. Make Hair Masks Your BFF:
Whether you’ve colored your hair or left it in its natural state, befriending a hair mask is always a great idea. A nourishing hair mask acts as a high-powered conditioner that can significantly improve the health and qualtiy of your hair.
You can either pick one up from the store or make your own mask at home using natural ingredients.
Side effect that comes with coloring your hair is the protein damage your hair goes through. You know your hair is in need of protein when it starts to stretch and snap off. It might also feel a bit weak when it is wet. The only way to fix this is by nourishing your hair with protein. You can use store-bought protein treatments or DIY hair masks.
- You Will Need:
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoon mayonnaise
- Processing Time:
Keep It for about 45 minutes
- In a bowl, whip a whole egg and two tablespoons of mayonnaise together until you get a smooth mixture.
- Start working the mixture into your hair. Concentrate most on the tips of your hair.
- Once all of your hair is covered, leave the egg-mayo pack on for about 45 minutes.
- Proceed to wash your hair with a mild sulfate-free shampoo and cool water.
- Repeat this once a week to get better results.
13. Hot Oil Treatment:
Hot oil treatments are so easy to do at home and it help color-treated hair really shine. Apply the hot oil to clean, towel-dried hair and cover it with a shower cap. Apply heat by using a hot towel, or a blow dryer. Then, allow your hair to cool down to room temperature before rinsing off the oil with cool water.
While hair mask can do a great job to improve the health of your hair, weekly oiling must also be an integral part of your hair care routine. Whether it is applying oil to your hair before bed and washing it off in the morning or a hot oil treatment, no hair care routine can be complete without oiling.
Oils locks nourishment and moisture in your hair. They also form a protective layer over your hair, which protects it from sun and heat damage.
Use 2-3 tablespoons of carrier oil of your choice such as coconut, olive, or jojoba or almond oil.
14. Supplements Improve the quality and health Of Color-Treated Hair:
Vitamins are another key to keeping your color-treated hair healthy and shiny. Vitamin C keeps the blood vessels in the scalp healthy. Vitamin C also helps you absorb iron from plant proteins.
Biotin, a plant protein is an essential B vitamin, strengthens weak hair and improves its texture. However, research to prove the same is quite limited. Biotin is found in carrots, egg yolks, and sardines. When your diet is lacking in vitamins, taking vitamin supplements can help keep your hair and your body healthy and strong.
